News Herald from Port Clinton, Ohio (2024)

1 1 1 10 News Herald, Port Clinton, Monday, Feb. 21, 1983 OSU guards lead win over Hawkeyes COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) The shortest players for 20th-ranked Ohio State, Troy Taylor and Ron Stokes, provide the biggest headaches for the opposition. Iowa's coaches and players. "They're definitely the quickest pair, of guards I've faced," said Steve Carfino, 16thrated Iowa's 6-foot-2 junior guard. Taylor had just scored 22 points and Stokes 19 in the Buckeyes' 85-69 Big Ten rout of the Hawkeyes Saturday night.

"It was simply a matter of Iowa Coach Lute said. "'They destroyed us at the guard spots. We haven't had anybody take us out of the things we wanted to do the way they did." The 6-foot Taylor sank 7 of 12 floor shots and 8 of 10 free throws. His 5-11 sophom*ore buddy, Stokes, came off the bench to hit 4 of 6 field goal attempts and 11 of 15 foul shots. "We hurt all teams," Taylor said after helping stay Ohio State one game behind league-leading Indiana.

"We've got quickness over every team we play." The Buckeyes are in second place with a 9-4 record and stand 17-6 overall. Iowa drops three games from the lead with a 7-6 mark. The Hawkeyes are 16-7 for all games. Miller called his team's fifth consecutive victory its best performance of the season. "It was beautiful to watch from a coach's standpoint.

It was our most complete game at both ends," he said. After ties at 12, 14 and 16, the Buckeyes broke away to a 30-22 lead and built a 42-31 halftime cushion. A run of 11 points padded that margin to 53-33 in the first four minutes of the second half. Iowa was never closer than 10 points thereafter. "We weren't on top of our game.

That has been the trend all year. We play one good game and then we let down. put two good games together," said Iowa's Greg Stokes following a 28-point performance. "We got a good offensive game out of Stokes, but he was very mediocre at the other end," Olson said. The 6-10 sophom*ore hit 12 of 20 floor shots and collected 11 rebounds.

Tony Campbell, who scored 17 points for Ohio State, si "We played well on defense. We cut them off, all except for Stokes. Puleo misses workout And Stokes cannot win games himself." Olson says starting forward Mark Gannon suffered a hyperextension of his knee in the first half and his status is uncertain this week. The scoreless Gannon did not play in the second half. The officiating crew, headed by Jim Bain, called 23 personal fouls on Iowa to 16 for Ohio State.

But Olson refused to comment afterward on the work of Bain, officiating his first Iowa game since his controversial call against the Hawkeyes at Purdue last season. Olson charged that Bain's call on Kevin Boyle cost Iowa a 66-65 loss in the last game of the season at Purdue. It led to death threats against Bain, 7,000 letters of protest to the Big Ten office and a conference reprimand for Olson. Eleswhere in games involving Ohio's major college teams, Bowling Green remained atop the Mid-American Conference by downing Miami 75-63. Ohio University kept within a game by dumping Ball State 62-48, Eastern Michigan beat Kent State 56-55 and Northern Illinois beat Toledo 79-74.

Xavier remained in a second-place tie in the Midwestern City Conference by tripping Detroit 69-61 behind Jeff Jenkins' 25 points. The Musketeers improved to 7-3 in the conference and 16-6 overall, the best Xavier mark since its 16-10 season of 1963. "We played well when we needed said Xavier Coach Bob Staak. "Late in the game, we were playing not to lose instead of playing to win. But I'm very happy with the victory." Guard Curtis Green hit a team-high 16 points, 12 of them in the second half, to pace Southern Mississippi to a 69-59 victory over Cincinnati in the Metro Conference.

Cincinnati was led by 18 points from Dwight Jones and 16 from Myron Hughes. Capital downed BaldwinWallace 74-66 to take the Ohio Conference title, along with the top seed and a first-round bye going into tonight's first round of the league tournament. Wittenberg lost to Muskingum 75-57 and Ohio Wesleyan fell 93- 79 to Oberlin to finish in a second-place tie. Elsewhere. Heidelberg edged Marietta 84- 81, Mount Union downed Kenyon 56-50, Ohio Northern defeated Denison 49-38 and Wooster got by Otterbein TAMPA, Fla.

(AP) Cincinnati Reds pitcher Charlie Puleo missed Sunday's workout because of a sprained right knee suffered while throwing last Thursday. "I don't think it's serious," he said. "I didn't think anything about it until it started swelling." Trainer Larry Starr said Puleo would miss the workout for pitchers and catchers today and possibly Tuesday as well. Puleo was acquired by the Reds in the trade that sent Tom Seaver back to the New York Mets. Classified Ads Get Quick Results Public Notices PUBLIC NOTICE THE COURT OF COMMON OTTAWA COUNTY.
